Since 2015, Healthy People Healthy Places grants have supported work throughout Maine to improve the well-being of people and the environment. Community-based work in the Katahdin Region, Lewiston-Auburn, Washington County, and Wabanaki Communities and Tribal Governments, is complemented by statewide efforts in Food Systems and Nature-Based Education, as well as statewide policy, advocacy, and communications work in the Keystone focus area.

2024 Grants Process

2024 will be the third year of our 2022-2024 multi-year grants budget.  As such, over 75% of our Healthy People Healthy Places 2024 budget has been allocated through multi-year grants.  Because the number of organizations we will be able to support with new grants will be so limited, we have decided to make 2024’s Healthy People Healthy Places grant round by invitation only.

2024 grant invitees for the Lewiston-Auburn focus area will be determined at your sessions in January.  Interested L-A organizations should contact Lauress Lawrence for more information.

Other focus area leads will reach out to invited organizations with the application link and support materials by January 19, with an application due date of February 15, 2024.

  • January 19, 2024: Application link and materials will be sent to invitees by this date

  • February 15, 2024: Online applications due

  • Late April, 2024: Email notification of grant decisions

Review Considerations

  • Work meets the Foundation’s General Considerations

  • The work of the applicant must be aligned with Sewall Foundation’s mission and values

General Priorities:

  • Organizations led by and serving black, indigenous, people of color, rural Mainers, and women

  • Collaborative, cross-sector, or grassroots efforts to coordinate or develop new approaches in their field or sector, a geographic region, or a specific community or population

  • Efforts that are explicit in their commitment to social, environmental, and racial justice

  • Efforts that integrate the well-being of communities and the environment

Grant size:

  • Grants will generally be in the $10,000 to $50,000 range to an individual organization and up to $200,000 for collaborative requests. There may be some variation between focus areas, so we recommend checking the specific focus area information sheets or with the focus area staff for guidance on your request. Organizations can apply for individual organization support in addition to being part of a collaborative request.
