Grant Criteria

Please note that an examination of the Foundation's areas of giving and criteria is underway.  Any resulting refinements will be published by the end of October, 2010.

The Directors of the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation are committed to deploying the resources of the Foundation for maximum positive impact in selected areas of focus. To further this goal, the Foundation makes grants in three topical areas – Animal Welfare, Environment and Human Well-Being – according to the following criteria:

 

Animal Welfare:

  • Enhance the value and importance of animals to human health and well-being
  • Encourage practices and activities that promote benefits and reduce harm to animals
  • Advance wildlife research and education
  • Ensure humane treatment of companion and farm animals

Environment:

  • Encourage local/regional conservation that enhances Maine’s quality of place
  • Support habitat protection, restoration and related public education
  • Provide opportunities for people to remain connected to the land
  • Protect Maine’s working lands and waters

Human Well-Being:

  • Sustain a network of social services for Maine residents in great need
  • Provide opportunities for educational enrichment and economic advancement
  • Enhance Maine’s quality of life and resource-based economy
  • Promote healthy lifestyles
